Grounded coffee scrub is not only amazing for your skin and aromatherapy heaven, it’s super easy to make! We’re talking 3 simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Gotta love it when indulgence and simplicity meet.
Your skin is obviously gorgeous no matter what! Coffee is simply here to help it shine. And isn’t it so fun to spoil yourself with some extra skin care goodness?
Ready to treat yourself to some grounded coffee scrub and learn more about it’s skin care powers? Marvelous! Let’s do this:
Why Coffee is Great for your Skin
It’s probably no surprise that I love to put coffee on my skin at this point. This isn’t the first time I’ve shared a skin care recipe that’s overflowing with coffee anyway. I’m kind of obsessed.
Which is funny… because I actually hate the way it tastes (a little like sadness, if I’m being honest…) Sorry to all the coffee lovers in the house, I just can’t be swayed.
But hey, that stuff sure does smell like magic! And it’s got some pretty amazing skin care superpowers too. So I wouldn’t say that I’m not on team coffee. I just use my membership in a very unexpected way.

What’s in it for your skin?
I’ve talked about the goodness caffeine has to offer that gorgeous skin of yours before. But let’s refresh our memories. Because this stuff is seriously brag worthy!
Coffee grounds work it in the exfoliating department, gently scrubbing away those dead skin cells and revealing healthy, happy skin waiting underneath.
It gets better! Dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams has this to say about caffeine and skin care:
“Researchers have found that the topical use of caffeine has numerous benefits to skin including helping to increase circulation” (source).
Increased circulation means smooth, glowing skin. Which is pretty much the dream!
Caffein might also help to reverse sun damage, which is an exciting possibility. According to this study applying caffeine topically after UVB exposure may partially diminish sun damage and even photocarcinogenesis, which is a fancy way of saying that it could reduce cancer cells caused by too much fun in the sun. If that isn’t a superpower then I don’t know what is!
Caffeine also acts as a diuretic, reducing fluid build up and decreasing puffiness. This can be a big help if you have puffy, sleepy eyes (although, I would caution you to be extra gentle using any product near your eyes… and definitely avoid getting anything in there, because ouch!) (source)
That diuretic ability is also why you’ll often find caffeine in cellulite creams. The diuretic effect helps to temporarily decrease the appearance of cellulite. But I personally think that self love is the best response to cellulite ;). (source)

Talk about a ton of awesomeness eh? Ready to get scrubbing?
Why This DIY Grounded Coffee Scrub Rocks
This easy recipe creates 2 cups of decadent body scrub. Enough for a few magnificent showers!
It’s lovely to use after you’ve dry brushed and hopped into the shower, to further exfoliate and moisturize your gorgeous skin. And the smell may even help to perk you up a bit in the morning.
Super bonus – if you are a coffee drinker you can make this with your used coffee grounds. Recycling score! Captain Planet would be so proud of us.
But fair warning – if you’d like to scrub your face I actually prefer to create this coffee face scrub instead. The skin on our face is extra sensitive so I like to make something twice as gentle to keep it happy. You can absolutely use this one too (and even mix in a little extra coconut oil for a moisturizing boost). Just don’t press too hard!

You can also make a pretty amazing ethical impact if you choose to use fair trade ingredients! Supporting fair trade helps to ensure that farmers (many of whom live in developing nations) receive fair wages and safe work environments and also supports agricultural improvements and community development.
While coffee and sugar are hot commodities, it can be incredibly difficult for small-scale farmers to create a profitable business. Which really isn’t fair at all.
Fair trade helps to ensure that they receive fair wages for all of their hard work. It’s incredibly important that we do our best to support that. Learn more about the importance of supporting fair trade coffee here, fair trade coconut oil here and fair trade sugar here.

Emily Anneemily
I’ve always wanted to try making a coffee ground scrub! This sounds really really nice and should help with some dry skin as the weather gets colder! Thanks for sharing!
Sara
I’m so excited for you to try it Emily! I use it all year round, but I especially prioritize it in the winter time. It really does help to keep your skin soft and moisturized. I hope that you adore it as much as I do :). Let me know what you think if you treat yourself to a batch ^^
Jamie
Ah, this sounds like perfection! I am a big lover of coffee everything. I’m pretty sad for you that you can’t enjoy it. A non coffee lover cannot understand the happiness that is involved in a quiet morning and breathing in the warm aroma before your first glorious sip. But, I digress 😉 Skincare is the next best thing- definitely going to whip some of this up!! <3 Jamie
Sara
Hahaha my big sister, who is a total coffee lover, would absolutely agree with you. And I can appreciate where you’re coming from. I actually dislike all hot drinks hahaha. My favourite drink is water! I’m basically vanilla over here! But the first thing I do every moment is savour a big glass of room temperature water (sometimes with lemon if I’m feeling it). So while I’m sure it’s not the exact same, I can certainly appreciate that quiet moment with your first drink of the day ;).
I hope you save up some coffee grounds and treat yourself to this sometime. Adding that coffee aromatherapy goodness to the shower is a pretty wonderful experience in my opinion xD. I hope you adore it <3.
Jamie
Oooooooh I can totally get on board with that. When I was really really suffering from PPA I couldn’t drink anything hot. And, I prefer my water room temperature. Coincidentally, I eat ice though. ?♀️ there’s no telling. But, just in case you were worried- I did drink iced decaf coffee when I was going through all that so I had my coffee even without any of the things I love about it haha.
notquitesupermommn
I am in love with this scrub, I’m saving my grounds tomorrow and having a scrub making party in my kitchen 🙂 As a coffee lover, I would imagine this smells like heaven when you use it! <3
Sara
Oh yay! That makes my day Nicole! I hope that you have so much fun making it ^^. I’d love to hear what you think :D. I personally can’t get enough of the delicious smell of coffee. Using it in my skin care routine is basically me looking for excuses to enjoy that smell as much as possible without drinking it hahaha. The skin care benefits are just a total bonus! I love when that happens xD.
Cassie | White Sands and Cool Breezes
I’ve never made or used a coffee scrub but since we are coffee drinkers in the house I will definitely be trying this scrub 🙂 I am a lavender girl so that will be the essential oil I’ll use! So excited! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!!
Sara
I’m right with you on the lavender boat Cassie! Yay! I love that you can save your grounds and easily treat yourself to this. I hope that you love it as much as I do! Let me know how it goes <3.

ruiyyanko
Must admit I’m more of a tea person, but I do like a big cup of latte in the morning (which always seems to me just a fancy name for coffee-flavoured milk! 😀 ) I knew it could help reduce cellulite, but never knew it could be effective against sun damage too. I’ll definitely have to try making the coffee scrub…no excuses since I already have all the ingredients!
Sara
You’re so right, latte really is just a fancy word for coffee-flavoured milk lol. I love it! And I was just as amazed as you are when I found out all of the goodness coffee had to offer our skin. It’s pretty cool. I was honestly interested in making coffee skin care products because I loved the smell. But I’m totally down for all of the extra bonuses. That just makes it a bigger win! I hope that you have fun creating this and enjoy it as much as I do. Let me know what you think 🙂
Mama Doc
This sounds amazing! I am a coffee drinker, so I can’t wait to recycle the grounds and try this! Thanks for this great idea!
Sara

Sara

janna
that’s so interesting! I never knew that coffee applied topically could potentially reverse sun damage and photocarcinogenesis.
Sara
It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it Janna? I was just as surprised as you are when I found the research that showed coffee’s potential to reverse sun damage. I think that’s so cool. I hope that they do more studies so that we can learn more about this awesome possibility. And I also hope that you treat yourself to a batch of coffee scrub and adore it as much as I do :). Wishing you well!
Deserted_Queen
I am already a coffee lover. Caffeine addict. Now I will save grounds and make this scrub.

Sara

katie werthmann
I love this recipe and im def going to try it! for someone who has never had a cup of coffee in her life, i do like the smell of the beans. are grounded and ground interchangeable? is that a British thing or something? because here grounded p isn’t a term, it’s just ground. but i know overseas from usa things are trickier.
Sara
Hi Katie! I’m so excited for you to try this. I hope you adore it.
Grounded coffee (or coffee grounds) are just beans that have been pulverized (typically in a coffee grinder) so that they are closer to a powder consistency. You can buy a bag of coffee grounds so that you don’t have to worry about breaking the beans down in a coffee grinder or food processor. That’s what I usually go for since I only use coffee to make self care products.
I’m not really sure about what term comes from where. I live in Canada if that helps at all. But I also don’t drink coffee and simply did a Keyword Search before writing this post to see what most people were googling when they’re looking for a coffee scrub recipe. But that’s a whole other thing haha. I’m sure you weren’t looking for a blogging lesson when you asked this question!
I hope that you have tons of fun finding the right coffee for you (I personally love to smell the beans before I choose which one I plan to work with – so much fun!) And I really hope that you adore this as much as I do. Let me know what you think 🙂
