Your skin is obviously gorgeous no matter what! Coffee is simply here to help it shine. And isn’t it so fun to spoil yourself with some extra skin care goodness?
Ready to treat yourself to some grounded coffee scrub and learn more about it’s skin care powers? Marvelous! Let’s do this:
Why Coffee is Great for your Skin
It’s probably no surprise that I love to put coffee on my skin at this point. This isn’t the first time I’ve shared a skin care recipe that’s overflowing with coffee anyway. I’m kind of obsessed.
Which is funny… because I actually hate the way it tastes (a little like sadness, if I’m being honest…) Sorry to all the coffee lovers in the house, I just can’t be swayed.
But hey, that stuff sure does smell like magic! And it’s got some pretty amazing skin care superpowers too. So I wouldn’t say that I’m not on team coffee. I just use my membership in a very unexpected way.
What’s in it for your skin?
I’ve talked about the goodness caffeine has to offer that gorgeous skin of yours before. But let’s refresh our memories. Because this stuff is seriously brag worthy!
Coffee grounds work it in the exfoliating department, gently scrubbing away those dead skin cells and revealing healthy, happy skin waiting underneath.
It gets better! Dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams has this to say about caffeine and skin care:
“Researchers have found that the topical use of caffeine has numerous benefits to skin including helping to increase circulation” (source).
Increased circulation means smooth, glowing skin. Which is pretty much the dream!
Caffein might also help to reverse sun damage, which is an exciting possibility. According to this study applying caffeine topically after UVB exposure may partially diminish sun damage and even photocarcinogenesis, which is a fancy way of saying that it could reduce cancer cells caused by too much fun in the sun. If that isn’t a superpower then I don’t know what is!
Caffeine also acts as a diuretic, reducing fluid build up and decreasing puffiness. This can be a big help if you have puffy, sleepy eyes (although, I would caution you to be extra gentle using any product near your eyes… and definitely avoid getting anything in there, because ouch!) (source)
That diuretic ability is also why you’ll often find caffeine in cellulite creams. The diuretic effect helps to temporarily decrease the appearance of cellulite. But I personally think that self love is the best response to cellulite ;). (source)
Talk about a ton of awesomeness eh? Ready to get scrubbing?
Why This DIY Grounded Coffee Scrub Rocks
This easy recipe creates 2 cups of decadent body scrub. Enough for a few magnificent showers!
It’s lovely to use after you’ve dry brushed and hopped into the shower, to further exfoliate and moisturize your gorgeous skin. And the smell may even help to perk you up a bit in the morning.
Super bonus – if you are a coffee drinker you can make this with your used coffee grounds. Recycling score! Captain Planet would be so proud of us.
But fair warning – if you’d like to scrub your face I actually prefer to create this coffee face scrub instead. The skin on our face is extra sensitive so I like to make something twice as gentle to keep it happy. You can absolutely use this one too (and even mix in a little extra coconut oil for a moisturizing boost). Just don’t press too hard!
You can also make a pretty amazing ethical impact if you choose to use fair trade ingredients! Supporting fair trade helps to ensure that farmers (many of whom live in developing nations) receive fair wages and safe work environments and also supports agricultural improvements and community development.
While coffee and sugar are hot commodities, it can be incredibly difficult for small-scale farmers to create a profitable business. Which really isn’t fair at all.
Fair trade helps to ensure that they receive fair wages for all of their hard work. It’s incredibly important that we do our best to support that. Learn more about the importance of supporting fair trade coffee here, fair trade coconut oil here and fair trade sugar here.
We vote with our wallets everyday! Sometimes the smallest changes can make the most incredible differences.
