The things that help you feel relaxed. Soothing habits that de-stress you. Feel good activities that support your well-being. Or just the little things that make you happy.

Self care is a form of self love. And that, my friends, is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Because, when you love and care for yourself, you take care of yourself and make choices from a kind, loving place. So let’s work on our relationships with our incredible selves and get our self care on!

Feed your Body with Kindness

There is no greater way to show yourself love than to feed your body with gentle, healthy, whole foods. What you eat plays a HUMONGOUS role in your health. Create a healthy foundation and support your body from the inside out.

Speak Kindly to Yourself

Your voice has a powerful influence on you. Think about it, you’re listening to yourself all day long. That can really affect your mood and self-esteem. Don’t speak to yourself in a way that you would never allow others to speak to you. Work on creating a kind and supportive inner voice with positive self-talk and affirmations. Some examples:

“I am beautiful, intelligent and strong”

“I love myself wholeheartedly”

“Self care plays an important role in my health – I will make time for myself”

“I love and honour my body”

“I accept myself as I am”

Work on speaking kindly to yourself and eventually it will become an amazing, uplifting habit.

Oil Pull with Oil of Oregano

Spice up your dental care routine by coconut oil pulling with added oil of oregano. Simply swish approximately a tablespoon of coconut oil with 3 to 4 drops of oil of oregano for 15 to 20 minutes. Home spa days are the best! And a homemade clay mask are an absolute home spa must! They can be a fun, healthy way to exfoliate and clean your skin. With awesome options like bentonite, kaolin and French yellow clay, you can definitely find the perfect match for your skin type. Shots of Coconut Milk Kefir

Support your gut microbiome by downing a shot of probiotic laden coconut milk kefir every day. The bacteria in your gut is so important. They aid in breaking down food, producing vitamins that we can’t make ourselves and showing our immune system how to be a bad ass. Keeping their numbers high with fermented foods is so important. And coconut milk kefir is a simple, loving way to do that.

My favourite go to kefir is The Cultured Coconut, made right here in Atlantic Canada. It’s 170% more potent than leading yogurt brands and 3 times more effective than a probiotic supplement (source). It’s also organic, casein and lactose-free, sugar-free, cholesterol-free, gluten-free and vegan.

If you’re not so sure about drinking it straight, you can also add this goodness to smoothies, yogurt, salad dressings and more. It’s such an easy form of self care, you can definitely fit it into your daily routine.

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy can work wonders. Scent is one of the strongest senses! It can practically bring us back in time, allowing us to reminisce, relax, and feel soothed… essential oils provide us with that and more.

Essential oils are volatile liquids that have been distilled from plans, including their seeds, leaves, flowers, roots, stems, fruit etc. It’s a fancy way of saying that these babies play an important part in a plants health, and they can play a role in ours as well. They’re capable of affecting our emotions (you can read more about that here), but they can also provide pain relief, be used to clean and disinfect and work as a safe alternative to air fresheners and perfume.

Mint is a personal favourite. The menthol found in mint creates a cooling feeling that can soothe headaches and muscle pain when mixed with a carrier oil. The scent is also uplifting and calming (and really clears those nasal passageways!)

So load up on your favourite oils, create blends you adore in your diffuser, clean with them and turn to them when you need relief from physical pain or stress.

10 to 20 minutes of mindfulness meditation a day can make a huge difference in our health and wellbeing. Center your mind on one thought, like a mantra or simply focus on your breathing. It can be difficult to do at first but becomes easier with each session. You will come out of it feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and joyful. It’s truly incredible!

Studies have shown that meditation can help to reduce anxiety by as much as 39% as well as increase your focus, concentration, empathy and compassion! On top of that, it can even lower blood pressure and support your immune system. Meditation definitely deserves a space in your self care routine.
