That’s right! Get ready to get your dessert on baby! Chocolaty goodness has your back. At least, when you know how to make chocolate with the right ingredients. Or when you buy healthier options.

There are healthy products out there when you need them. Like my fair trade, organic faves Camino or Prana. Not a sponsor, I just love them. Although, if the awesome peeps at Camino or Prana are reading, I’d be so happy to work together. You can even pay me in chocolate! 😉

If you want to have your chocolate cake and eat it too you can keep it nutritious by sticking with raw cacao. That’s where the magic happens.

Cacao beans, the building blocks of all chocolate, offer your bodacious bod some awesome nutrients like:

  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Fiber
  • Flavanols

Just 1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder gives you 9% of your daily recommended value of magnesium. Magnesium helps your body absorb calcium, plays a roll in muscle and nerve function, aids in maintaining a healthy heart, supports immune function, promotes healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and tons more. That’s a pretty big deal, right?

Add in the iron (4% of your daily in 1 tbsp) and we’re in food heaven! This essential mineral helps transport oxygen throughout the body. Which is amazing and also a big factor in energy production. A lack of iron tends to leave us feeling super drained. And who has time for that? Not me! (source)

Oh, and I should also mention that it supports your digestive health with all that fiber (4% of your daily per tbsp). Fiber also stabilizes your blood sugar. You can’t go wrong with that! (source)

The flavanols found in cacao are pretty flipping cool too! More studies are needed, but it’s possible that they support your cardiovascular health, protect your blood vessel linings and prevent high blood pressure (source).

Oh, but the goodness doesn’t stop there…

Those sexy flavanols also have a photoprotective quality. That means that eating healthy chocolate options on the regular will help your skin protect you from UV damage! Booyah!

Quality truly matters here. Those inexpensive, conventional bars didn’t protect show any photoprotective qualities at all. Which is totally lame, don’t you think? (source)

But hey, once you know how to make chocolate on your own, you can cash in on all the good stuff whenever you want!

I used to adore gourmet chocolates. And I assumed that those delights were things I could only find in a store. If you told me you made chocolate I’d assume you were a freaking wizard! But it turns out that it’s actually super easy. And the end result is something creamy and magnificent, just like those gourmet chocolates I used to devour!

So let’s all become chocolate making wizards! You can start with this simple, delicious recipe. <3

This recipe is vegan and gluten free. Creates approximately 18 Chocolate Bites (depending on the chocolate mould you use).

You will need a chocolate mould, like this.

And we will be using raw cacao power, like this Raw, Organic, Free Trade Cacao Powder by Navitas.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Cacao Powder
  • 4 Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Peanut Butter
  • 3 Tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 2 Tbsp Almond Flour

Instructions

  1. Mix everything together until well blended and spoon the homemade chocolate into your mould.

  2. Lick the bowl (this step is incredibly important ^^).

  3. Pop that mould in the freezer and let the chocolate bites harden. Since these chocolates have a coconut oil base they will set quickly; you can have your chocolate in approximately 10 minutes!

  4. Keep them refrigerate (if you don't eat them all in one sitting ;)), as they'll soften at room temperature.

Quick, easy and delicious. That’s my kind of healthy dessert!

In fact, a little behind the scenes confession… it was hard as can be not to eat these while they worked it for the camera. And once I was done I ate every last one. Oops! Don’t tell my hubby!

I hope you adore them as much as I do! If you have a sweet tooth and an adoration for all things chocolate you are going to adore these. And make them often!

Enjoy! Did you already know how to make chocolate? Have a recipe of your own to share? Did you love learning all about cacao? Share your thoughts and feels in the comments below. Super bonus if you nibble on chocolate while you do it!

I’ve always been a bit of a chocoholic, so it’s comforting to know that it’s not the worst for my body haha. The best chocolate things I’ve ever made were truffles. This chocolate recipe looks so easy to follow 🙂

Yum, chocolate! I love all the health benefits you listed fo one of my favorite treats. I won’t feel so guilty indulging every now and then 😉 I can’t wait to try your recipe, fingers crossed that it works well with a peanut butter substitute…we have a peanut allergy at our house so the real stuff is a no-go.

I couldn’t agree more Nicole! Go chocolate! I was really excited to learn that it can actually be super good for you. Wanna have my chocolate cake and eat it too yo (I mean, who’s making cake and not eating it, right?)

I’m so sorry one of your family members have a peanut allergy! I know those can be scary. If you have a nut butter substitute I am sure it would work. As long as it’s a similar texture it should work just fine! It might change the flavour a little, but if you like the butter then I’m sure you will enjoy this! I’d love to hear how it goes. If you don’t mind, please let me know so I have suggestions for anyone else who may be in the same position! Sending you tons of love <3
