Chickpea Flour is Magical

I have been dying to try chickpea flour for a while now! I mean… the possibilities are endless. I’ve seen people get seriously creative all over Instagram (scrolling through healthy food porn is a personal guilty pleasure. Tell me I’m not alone?)

But when I finally got my hands on some of Namaste Foods’ Garbanzo Bean Flour (another name for chickpea flour) I hesitated. Not because I was short on inspiration. It was actually the exact opposite. Inspiration overload! Where do I even begin?

My husband suggested that we keep it simple. Less is often more after all, so why not pump the breaks a little and let the chickpea flour truly shine.

And man oh man was he ever right! We worked together to create an homage to a delicious French street food called Socca (a wonderful flatbread made with chickpea flour). And I may have used up the entire bag perfecting the recipe.

Ok, it was already perfect before the last batch or two. But I’m kind of obsessed guys! And I’m fairly confident that you will be too! 😉

This chickpea flour flatbread recipe is easy street! If you want to you can even create it using only 3 ingredients – chickpea flour, water and a little coconut oil. Is that not the most marvelous thing ever?

I highly recommend adding herbs and spices for extra flavour (my favourite mix is part of this recipe) but you can absolutely get by without them. Or have fun with it and create herb mixes of your own. There are so many options!

My favourite part, there’s some healthy goodness to take in at the same time!

Why Chickpeas Are Awesome

Chickpeas are obviously the star of this flatbread recipe. And I promise they deserve their time in the limelight.

Beautiful chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) are more than just cute little legumes. They’ve got nutrients up the wazoo! And they’re pretty excited to share all of the goodness that they have to offer with you.

When you’re munching chickpeas you are loading up on molybdenum, manganese, folate, copper, fiber, phosphorus, protein, iron and zinc. (source)

All that awesome fiber (approximately 45% of your daily value per cup) supports that sexy digestive tract of yours. And we’ve got a pretty decent blend of insoluble and soluble fiber to enjoy. Which means that you’re promoting regular bowel movements and providing your lovely microbiome with some much needed prebiotics. Booyah! (source 1, source 2)

The nutrients found in chickpeas also help to improve blood sugar and insulin secretion and lower LDL-cholesterol levels and triglycerides (thus reducing your risk of heart disease). Isn’t that cool? Plus there’s an awesome supply of antioxidants in there waiting for you to devour them! Isn’t that flipping marvelous? (source)

This flatbread is delish solo but there are some dipping options if you’re down for that!

If you want to enjoy your flatbread with olive oil (one of the traditional options) adding herbs and spices to the mix makes it even more delicious. And the earlier you add them in the more flavourful it will become. Put this olive oil goodness together the night before for extra deliciousness. Or make it before you start working on the socca for a hint of flavour.

You can also dip it in hummus. Because dipping chickpeas in chickpeas is surprisingly delicious! ^^

Either way, it’s yum town. Population you! Are you ready?

Ingredients

Chickpea Flour Flatbread Recipe

  • 1 Cup Chickpea (Garbanzo Bean) Flour Like Namaste Foods
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp Oregano
  • 1 Tsp Dill
  • 2 Pinches Himalayan Pink Salt
  • 1 Heaping Tbsp Coconut Oil to Grease the Pan Feel free to use more if needed

Herb Infused Olive Oil

  • 1/2 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Oregano
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Rosemary
  • 1 Pinch Himalayan Pink Salt

Instructions

Chickpea Flour Flatbread Recipe

  1. Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl until well blended.

  2. Let sit for 30 minutes before cooking. This allows the flour to fully absorb the water and thicken.

  3. Place a large frying pan over medium heat and generously grease it with 1 heaping tbsp of coconut oil.

  4. Once the oil has melted, poor the chickpea flatbread mixture into the frying pan.

  5. Cook until the edges start to brown. This takes approximately 5 minutes over medium heat.

  6. Once the edges have started to brown, flip the flatbread to allow the other side to cook. Depending on the size of your bread, you may need two spatulas.

  7. Allow the other side to cook for approximately 2 to 3 minutes, until it has browned.

  8. Remove from the heat, cut into equal slices.

  9. Serve with hummus or olive oil and enjoy!

Herb Infused Olive Oil

  1. Mix the oil and herbs together in a ramekin. Cover and refrigerate between uses. Use within 4 days.

  2. Dip your flatbread in it or drizzle it on top. Yum!

  3. The longer the oil infuses the more flavourful it will become. Make it the day before for the best results. But if you need it right away it's still delicious if you put it together before you start work on the chickpea flatbread.

Thanks! I’ve already done mine. It’s actually the kids (4 & 6) on the elimination diet right now. Really lame. But I think we’ve figured out that corn is a problem (very sad about that). I’m putting your recipe on the meal plan this week!
