Why It’s OK To Be Selfish

Hello Lovelies:

Graves Disease has taught me so much about healing and self-love. In order to heal I had to be honest about my needs, listen to my body and sometimes seek help from the people I love. I also had to become comfortable with the idea of being selfish. Learning to be selfish was incredibly difficult for me. The word itself conjures up a negative image.

But I have come to realize that being selfish is not only healthy, it is necessary, and I think that you should try it too.

Graves Disease made me realize that being selfish is not only healthy, it is necessary, and I think that you should try it too.

Being selfish is often viewed as inappropriate and childish.

The idea behind the word selfish is that it is impossible to be both self-serving and benevolent. A lot of us believe that you can’t be devoted to yourself and also to others.

But I am not suggesting that you let go of your sympathy or your empathy. I am simply suggesting that you allow some sympathy and empathy for yourself. It is incredibly important that you are as devoted to yourself and concerned with your own interests, needs and welfare as you are for those around you. Sometimes you have to put yourself first.

Allow yourself some selfish time every day.

Devote some of your beautiful kindness inward and treat yourself with as much love as you would those around you. Being selfish has changed my life. It has allowed me to heal from a disease, maintain my own physical, emotional and mental well-being, and find joy in everyday life.

When you forget to take care of your own needs you end up drained, leaving less of your beautiful self to go around.

Looking at selfishness from a different perspective and taking care of your own needs will give you more energy and joy to selflessly share with those around you. Give it a try! I challenge you to do something selfish everyday this week and see how you feel. It may be just what your heart needs.

Health and love,

Thought of the day: I love myself and I respect my needs. I am willing to make myself a priority.

Well said. I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease just over 1 month ago and in the last few weeks I’ve noticed a huge difficulty concentrating focusing on basic tasks. I also have a low patience threshold. I’m usually very meticulous and patient. I don’t like this “new me” at all.

I have to stop beating myself up about it. It’s not the real me, but it is me for now and I need to learn to live with this.

I completely understand. I was diagnosed over two years ago and am currently in remission. Graves disease is a difficult journey, but a lot of patience, self-love, and support from friends and family will go a long way. If you need some support feel free to message me.
