What Goes Into Creating Healthy Hair?
There are so many factors that help to create those lustrous, healthy tresses we all desire. The obvious one is the products we choose to put on it (we’ll talk more about that in a second). But it’s so much deeper than that.
What you eat has a huge effect on your hair’s health, including how rapidly it grows and how quickly it falls out.
We naturally lose around 100 hairs a day when we’re doing good. Nutrients like proteins, fats, zinc, sulfur, vitamins A, B, E and more are pretty important for hair growth and shine. Learn more about how you can eat your way to sexy hair (and what foods to look out for) right here.
While eating for healthy hair may seem silly, not getting the right nutrients can easily affect how quickly your hair grows and how fast it falls out too. And it even plays a role in how it looks.

Here are a few delish hair healthy foods to enjoy:
- Pumpkin seeds
- Nuts and seeds
- Almond and peanut butter
- Nutritional yeast
- Orange fruits and veggies (like sweet potatoes, pumpkin and butternut squash)
- Leafy greens
- Omega 3 fatty acids (like hemp see oil and fish oil)
Your hormone levels also have a say in how fast and thick your hair can grow.
Your hair has different growth stages – growing, transitioning, resting and shedding. When your estrogen levels are higher (think puberty or pregnancy) your hair spends more time hanging out in the growing phase.
When those levels are lower (like when we hit menopause or after we have a baby) we may notice that we shed more hair. It’s all about balance! But when our hormones are out of balance, our hair health suffers too. (source)

It’s no just about estrogen. If you have a health condition that affects your thyroid, you may notice your hair feels dry and brittle and sheds more than it used to.
I certainly noticed this when I was knee deep in Graves Disease! But there’s a reason for that – thyroid hormones directly affect hair follicles. Unfortunately, this means that our illness can leave our hair looking and feeling a little sad. (source)
This is a natural symptom that will ease up once thyroid hormone levels are balanced. But a little extra TLC can help to reduce the damage. I used a homemade deep conditioner quite often to prevent as much damage as possible.
Stress can also leave us shedding hair faster than normal.
Making time to relax and de-stress is not only good for our mental health – it’s good for our mane too. Which is why a little self care can go a long way.
And the weather matters too.
When the air is cold and dry your hair suffers. It’s good to give your locks some extra love when the seasons are bumming them out.
Why Make Your Own Hair Care Products
With so many factors involved in hair health, you may be wondering why you should even bother to create a homemade deep conditioner…. well don’t you worry, because I’ve got two reasons gorgeous!
Firstly – remember how I said that your hair care products do affect your hair health? Well it turns out that most of us are using some pretty crappy options on a fairly regular basis.
According to the EWG, the personal care products we use on the daily often expose us to carcinogens, reproductive and developmental toxins and endocrine disruptors. This includes the products we use on our hair. Which is kind of a downer… especially considering that our main objective here is to care for ourselves. (source)
Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to find or make our own goodies that not only give us that sexy, shiny, full volume look we’re hoping for but also contain no icky ingredients. Booyah!
Secondly – everybody deserves to treat themselves to a little self-care.
Self-care is so important for our well-being. We all need to take time for ourselves to relax, unwind and zone out. And since de-stressing is good for your hair health anyway, you’re kind of doubling up on bonus points here.
Pick out a good book, poor a bath, deep condition your hair and soak in the tub until it’s time to shower. Super bonus if you added essential oils, because you’ll be enjoying a little aroma therapy! Total relaxation zone. I promise you’ll feel wonderful afterwards!
While you only need to leave the conditioner in for about 20 minutes, I’ve relaxed in the tub for an hour before rinsing it out before – so don’t you worry if you choose to take your time.
What Do The Ingredients Have To Offer
The three main ingredients in this homemade deep conditioner have some pretty awesome hair care magic.
What can’t coconut oil do?! This delicious oil is rich in vitamins K and E, which help to keep your mane thick and lustrous.
It also reduces protein loss in your gorgeous hair, which is pretty flipping awesome. Protein loss makes your hair thin, fragile and prone to breakage. So we want to keep that protein around, thank you very much. (source)
Even better, coconut oil helps to defend your hair from UV damage. While the idea of hair sunscreen may sound bizarre, UV rays actually dry your locks out. So a little protection in the area is much appreciated! (source)
Super bonus, coconut oil is more easily absorbed into your hair than other oils. So it can really go HAM on those lovely locks of yours and keep your mane healthy and happy. (source)
This amazing oil is rich in vitamins A and E and antioxidants and may help to lock in moisture. Olive oil might add some shine and soften your locks. (source)
It may also remove sebum buildup, which helps to encourage new growth. And the oleic acid found in olive oil lends a hand in making hair softer and more pliable. Super win, right? (source)

How To Make a Homemade Deep Conditioner
I rock a pretty long do, so this recipe will work well for you if you have super long hair. If you’re sporting an adorable pixie cut or something in between, you can easily half the recipe and still get the coverage you need.
Please exercise caution – these oils will make your tub slippery. So wipe down your tub before you stand up to shower, bust out your bath mat and be super careful. <3
DIY Healthy Hair Care – Homemade Deep Conditioner (Only 4 Ingredients)
Keep your hair soft, shiny and strong with this DYI Deep Conditioner. Made with Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Almond Oil and Optional Essential Oils, it’s totally easy to make! Heck yea!
- 3 Heaping Tbsps Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Tbsp Almond Oil
- 10 Drops Essential Oils (I prefer doTERRA Lavender or Peppermint) Optional
Add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl or mini food processor.
If using a mixing bowl, blend with egg beaters. Mix until you have an even, creamy consistency.
Work the mixture into dry hair, making sure that it's completely covered. You can use a comb or your fingers.
Optional bonus - massage into your scalp to give your skin a little extra love.
Let sit for approximately 20 minutes and then rinse and shampoo in the shower.
Caution - the oils will make your tub slippery. Please use a bath mat and be careful. 🙂
