Creamed Coconut is a Skin Care Superstar

Someone holds an unlabeled essential oils bottle above a bowl full of white liquid and flowers.

While all of the goodness that goes into this coconut milk bath recipe is pretty awesome, the creamed coconut is my favourite part. Creamed coconut is super thick and, you guessed it, creamy. It’s filled to the brim with moisturizing fats that your skin is going to love!

But what exactly is creamed coconut?

Creamed coconut (like Let’s Do Organic, my go to,) is created when ripe coconuts are harvested and their flesh is grated and soaked in water. The cream will rise to the top and subsequently be scooped out, packaged and sold to healthy foodies like you and me. It’s actually fantastic to have on hand and goes amazing in sauces, smoothies, stir fries and more. But why stop in the kitchen when it’s just dying to be kind to your skin too?

Creamed coconut is around 85% fat. Much like coconut oil, it’s filled to the brim with a fantastic mixture of skin healthy fats. And their moisturizing properties are pretty awesome. For one thing, they help to strengthen and increase your skin surface lipid levels (which is fancy talk for the oils that fill the spaces between your skin cells while protecting and moisturizing your skin’s surface). And on top of that we’re looking at a super hydrating effect (source).

Even cooler, all of the awesome coconut oil found in creamed coconut has been shown to take down staphylococcal colonization on the skin. This is an icky bacteria and if you’re like me and deal with eczema you definitely want to take this sucker down.

But, good news, this study found that the coconut oils (which are plentiful in creamed coconut) can destroy up to 95% of staphyoloccal colonization in eczema sufferers when used topically. Booyah! This means that moisturizing with coconut oil and bathing in coconut milk baths like this one is extra awesome for my eczema brothers and sisters (and still amazing for everyone else ;)).

Basically, soaking in this goodness for a while in the tub will leave your skin feeling silky smooth. And the delicious coconut scent, whether you choose to amp it up with essential oils or leave it au naturel, is totally relaxing and soothing. It’s all win! And super affordable and simple to put together. Ready to make yourself a batch?

Nourishing Coconut Milk Bath Recipe

Now you may be wondering “Hey Sara – why didn’t you use powdered coconut milk in this recipe”. And I hear ya! But you know I like to keep it healthy and simple here in the Ms. Health-Esteem house. And all of the powdered coconut milk I found came packing with a few other unnecessary ingredients. So I opted for shredded coconut (I love the super fine stuff by Let’s Do Organic for this recipe).

If shredded coconut seems like a strange stretch, don’t you worry. You can actually use shredded coconut to make your own coconut milk. So it’s definitely a perfect swap. But we’re going to grind that stuff up into a powder so it mixes well with your bath water, giving you that milky bath goodness you’re looking for. It only takes a few seconds in a coffee grinder or food processor and you are good to go!

Now let’s do this!

Author Sara - Ms. Health-Esteem

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Fine Shredded Coconut Like Let's do organic.
  • 1/2 Cup Corn Starch
  • 2 Tbsps Creamed Coconut Like Let's Do Organic
  • 10-20 Drops Essential Oil (Optional) Like doTERRA Lavender or Wild Orange

Instructions

  1. In a coffee grinder or mini food processor, grind your shredded coconut into a flour.

  2. Pour the shredded coconut into a mixing bowl and add the corn starch. Mix well.

  3. Add the essential oils (if using) and quickly mix it into the dry ingredients.

  4. Lastly, scoop in the creamed coconut and blend once more. You should have a nice, moist, powder-like consistency.

  5. Store in an air tight container in the fridge.

  6. Add to the bath as you are pouring the bath so that the coconut milk bath powder mixes well. The water should be almost opaque (and silky smooth on your gorgeous skin). Enjoy!

this sounds pretty easy to do and sounds great! I tried years ago to use coconut oil on my hair and it was a bit of a disaster. Greasy for a week, and I couldn’t wash it out but for the skin sounds much better!

Oh no! That must have been awful Janna! I’m so sorry to hear that. The creamed coconut is definitely oily, but if you don’t dunk your head you should be safe! Hope you love it 🙂
