Hello Lovelies:

Looking to get that beautiful skin glow? This simple, 5 ingredient DIY face scrub has your back! So bust out your food processor (or blender) and get ready to make a little skin care magic.

Let’s talk about why this homemade scrub rocks it in the skin care department and how you can make it. There’s even enough to share (although I won’t judge you if you don’t 😉 )

What Makes this DIY Face Scrub so Awesome

The main superstar of this gorgeous scrub is coffee! And while I may not drink coffee (because gross imo) I always keep some on hand for simple, homemade skin care goodness. Why oh why would I do that? It’s about far more than the fact that coffee smells like heaven! When used topically, it actually has a ton of goodness to offer your skin.

Coffee grounds are a wonderful way to exfoliate, gently scrubbing away dead skin cells and unveiling those healthy, beautiful cells underneath. According to the dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams “Researchers have found that the topical use of caffeine has numerous benefits to skin including helping to increase circulation” (source). Why would increased circulation be such an awesome benefit? Because that’s how you get that smooth, glowing look. Total win, right?

But it goes even further than that! Caffeine may also help to reverse sun damage. Say what?! According to this study applying caffeine topically after UVB exposure may partially diminish sun damage and even photocarcinogenesis, which is a fancy way of saying that it could reduce cancer cells caused by too much fun in the sun. That’s one awesome super power, coffee!

Caffeine also acts as a diuretic, which means that it can help to reduce fluid build up and decrease puffiness. This is awesome if you have puffy, sleepy eyes (although, I would caution you to be extra gentle using any product near your eyes… and definitely avoid getting anything in there, total ouch!) And that’s also why you’ll often find caffeine in cellulite creams. The diuretic effect helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite temporarily. (source)

So when we take all of that goodness and pop it into a DIY face scrub we’re getting softer, glowing skin with reduced puffiness, improved circulation (hello happy complexion) and a little UV protection. Pretty cool eh? But enough of me gabbing, let’s get creating!

  • 2 Cups Coffee Grounds (Used or New)
  • 1/2 Cup Himalayan Pink Salt or Cane Sugar

  1. Use pre-ground coffee beans or grind them in a coffee grinder. You can also save your coffee grounds if you drink coffee.

  2. Place all of the ingredients in a food processor and blend until well combined.

  3. Use on your face or body as a gentle, exfoliating scrub.

  4. Apply to your face using gentle circular motions (don't press too hard or you'll irritate your skin). Avoid getting the mixture into your eyes, nose and mouth.

  5. Leave on for around 15 minutes.

  6. Rinse off using a warm water and a wash cloth. And enjoy that glowing skin gorgeous!

I prefer to create this DIY face scrub with organic, fair trade coffee. Supporting fair trade helps to ensure that farmers (many of whom live in developing nations) receive fair wages and safe work environments and also supports agricultural improvements and community development.

While coffee is one hot commodity, it can be incredibly difficult for small-scale farmers to create a profitable business. Fair trade helps to ensure that they receive fair wages for all of their hard work. It’s incredibly important that we do our best to support that. Learn more about the importance of supporting fair trade coffee here.

Now it’s your turn – have you ever made any homemade self care products using coffee? Excited to give this DIY face scrub a try? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Wow!!! I love this!! Thanx for that great idea! I live in Guatemala so I’m always looking for easy and natural ways to cleanse my skin as you can’t find the “brand name” products here. 🙂

I’m so excited for you to give this one a try Iva! I find most of the brand names are full of icky ingredients that don’t serve our health well in the end unfortunately – so the good news is that most of the time you aren’t missing out on too much :). I got rid of almost all of my skin care and beauty products when I changed my lifestyle (I was SHOCKED at what I had been putting on my body day in and day out ><). And now I try and make everything that I can and buy the healthiest options possible when I can't. I really hope you have a blast making this and that you skin adores it as much as mine does! I'd love to hear what you think. Wishing you a wonderful day Iva!

I’ve used this once or twice. sometimes I’m too lazy to do it. But it really helps. And I like the aroma of the coffee while scrubbing.

I’m really happy you like coffee scrubs too Laurence! They really do smell amazing. I love when something is both good for the skin and gives you some fan-flipping-tastic aromatherapy. Super bonus, right?
And hey – it’s ok to do something a few times and put it on the back burner for a while. Self care activities are always there when you need them, but we don’t have to be too strict with ourselves or set with out routine. Resting is healing too. 🙂 I have lazy moments too and put things off all the time. Even face scrubs! But it’s fun to do it when I’m in the mood and my skin certainly appreciates it. Hope you give this a try when you’re feeling up for it! <3 Have a gorgeous day Laurence!

Interesting…does the coconut oil clog pores? My pores clog very easily, but I love the idea of a coffe scrub!

Hiya Amy! Thanks for the awesome question. A lot of people use coconut oil for skin care (myself included) with no issues. But I do have a friend who’s sensitive to oils and finds that too much (of any oil) clogs her pores. So it’s certainly possible that any oil could be an issue for some people. We all have different sensitivities :).

Have you used oils on your skin before? If you’re concerned about coconut oil and don’t want to risk it but have a go to oil that you know works well you can make something with that. Or if you have a body mousse/butter that works well for your sensitive skin you can create a simple coffee scrub with those too. Here’s a little recipe I use when I just want enough for one go:

1/2 Tsp of your favourite body mousse or butter

1/2 Tsp Fair Trade, Organic Coffee Grounds

Mix together until well blended. Apply gently to your gorgeous face, using gentle circular motions.

I hope that helps! It’s so important that we listen to our body. And no one knows what works better for you than you. But there’s almost always a way to tweak something so it works around our sensitivities. <3 Hope this helps you enjoy a coffee scrub. Let me know how it goes!

I bet this smells amazing. I can’t believe you don’t like coffee ?? but I’ll forgive it since you shared this amazing recipe. I haven’t thought of using coffee for my face (I have a body scrub but never thought to use it on the delicate skin on my face) but this sounds perfect for sloughing off dead skin from winter!

I get that a lot Jamie! It’s one of those things that people are always shocked to hear. But hey – that means more coffee for everyone else who enjoys it. You can have my shares!

It’s pretty wonderful how much coffee can do for your face. I definitely like that this one is blended up so the grains are small (I find chunkier exfoliating scrubs aren’t as great for the sensitive skin on our face). And it’s important not to press too hard, because that can irritate skin :). I hope you enjoy adding coffee scrub to your face care routine! Let me know what you think hun <3.
