There are few desserts that are as summery and marvelous as strawberry shortcake (or is that just me?) Honestly, when I close my eyes and think back to my childhood summers, I’m right back at my parents’ kitchen table… liking the bowl (I’ve always been a classy girl). Seriously though, you can’t let one dollop of whipped cream go to waste! You’re with me on that, right?
I haven’t had strawberry shortcake in years. And with strawberry season upon us, I decided it was high time I found a way to health it up.

Chocolate covered banana pops are my current dessert obsession. I have a serious love affair going on with bananas. They make a daily appearance in my diet… and if I’m out all day, you can bet your bottom dollar that I have a banana or two with me. I’ve got a healthy sweet tooth to satisfy after all!
And can you really blame me? Bananas are loaded with tons of marvelous nutrients like vitamin B6, manganese, vitamin C, potassium, fiber, copper and biotin. And your gut gets some goodness too; the probiotics in bananas help to keep your gut microbiome healthy and happy.
Super bonus – they also help to support your beautiful heart, thanks to lovely potassium. Potassium helps to keep your blood pressure regulated and might even protect you from atherosclerosis (the hardening and narrowing of your arteries). Booyah!

I’m a giant health food nerd. I’m sure that that’s obvious at this point – but I get pretty freaking excited when I discover new veggies to try. I’ve been aching to try purple sweet potatoes and when I FINALLY stumbled upon them at the Cultural Market I snatched those babies up like they were precious gems. But this was a two for one win, because they also had white sweet potatoes… I was in foodie nerd heaven! The first thing I wanted to make? Colourful sweet potatoe fries!
When I was little, one of my favourite chores was polishing the furniture. Put in a little elbow grease and all of the tables and shelves looked fabulous! Plus, the smell of lemons was to die for. These days I still enjoy making my bookshelves shine (my books are kind of my most prized possessions). But I prefer to avoid the conventional stuff and opt for a homemade furniture polish.
Why would I make my own? For one, it’s super easy and works wonders! But I’m also concerned about my husbands asthma and my skin. That lemon smell I liked so much happens to be artificial… and fragrances do not blend well with asthma (and really aren’t good for any of us – I’m a fan of knowing what I’m inhaling). My skin has no issue telling me what it likes and dislikes either, and certain cleaners leave me with an icky rash, polish included. So I like to keep it healthy and simple! I’ve been drooling over pictures of homemade waffles on Instagram for ages! It has been eons since I enjoyed a waffle breakfast. They kind of went to the wayside when I had to go gluten free. Many of the gluten free waffles out there either made my stomach sad or didn’t meet my ingredient standards. Still, I had hope that I would one day create a plate full of healthy, delicious waffles.
