I have some great news! I am in remission once again. My Graves Disease has settled down and I feel incredible. I still have my beautiful thyroid and I am medication free!
The first time I went through my Graves Disease battle I learned a lot. As difficult as this journey has been it has changed me in ways I could never have imagined. From my diet, to my outlook, to the way that I treat myself, I am, in a strange way, grateful for the changes that this experience has fostered.
This time around was different, of course, but I still managed to learn a lot from take two of my Graves Disease journey.
Here’s how I navigated my Graves Disease relapse as positively as possible:
I had the flu recently and it knocked me off my feet. Fevers, aches, chills and fatigue took over. On top of that I had some Graves Disease symptoms that I haven’t felt in over a year, and I was terrified. After some tests, I received bad news – I’m experiencing a Graves Disease Relapse.
We caught it early (my doctor thinks the flu caused some thyroiditis that led to some intense symptoms – they’re mostly gone now) but of course I was initially devastated.
But after a couple of weeks of soul searching, I am not surprised by my diagnosis. Here’s why (and what this Graves Disease relapse is teaching me)
Graves Disease has taught me so much about healing and self-love. In order to heal I had to be honest about my needs, listen to my body and sometimes seek help from the people I love. I also had to become comfortable with the idea of being selfish. Learning to be selfish was incredibly difficult for me. The word itself conjures up a negative image.
But I have come to realize that being selfish is not only healthy, it is necessary, and I think that you should try it too.
Everyone faces some forms of difficulty in their lives. Whether it be a physical or mental illness, a personal loss, financial strain, or something that can’t even be explained, we all have our own battles. No matter where we are in our journey, or what we’re facing, an awesome self care plan is the best way to make sure that we’re able to weather the storms.
A self care plan has been has been a key factor in my ability to thrive with Graves Disease. And you deserve to thrive in your circumstances too. Not quite sure where to start? Here are the key components of an awesome self care plan.
