Are You Stuck in a Nostalgia Loop? This Might Be Why.

Hello Lovelies:

Have you ever pined for days long past? Become stuck in the romantic ideas brought on by a nostalgia loop playing over and over in your mind? Felt an ache in your heart for your childhood days? I know I have.

Earlier this summer, I found my mind wistfully replaying the days of old; missing something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Try as I might I couldn’t shake that feeling.

Are you stuck in a nostalgia loop- Why you might be dreaming of the past.

It wasn’t until recently that I found what I had been missing.

Why I Was Stuck in a Nostalgia Loop

Hubby and I were celebrating together at our friends’ wedding. The dance started and, in typical fashion, I let myself drift away into the music. There are very few things that are as satisfying and exhilarating, at least in my world, as dancing with reckless abandon. The music becomes an extension of your own self-expression and for a moment you are free. Free from thought, free from worry; truly existing in the moment – Jovial and blissful.

In an ironic twist, I know that’s what my heart has been yearning for.

My thoughts were pulling me towards my past as a way to ask me to be freer in the present.

While I’ve certainly had a lovely summer of adventures, there haven’t been as many opportunities to exist in the thrill of reckless abandonment. That’s something we all need from time to time.

Remember when you were a kid and you’d head out for the day – no plan, no agenda and no strategy. Remember chasing whatever suited your fancy, getting lost in your dreams, running after butterflies until your little feet couldn’t carry you any further?

There was a time, before we entered this adult world with its strict code of conduct and robust limitations, when we lived with our hearts, followed our spirits and were unaffected by the judgement of others. It was a time filled with the exhilaration of discovery, adventure and self-expression. When our minds keep pulling us back to those days of roaming on smaller feet with no care in the world, we may very well be in need of more freedom and self-expression in the present moment.

I can’t be sure what makes your heart overflow with joy and exhilaration, but whatever that may be – do it! Give yourself permission to let go. It may be corny, but honestly, dance like no one is watching! Finger paint, dip your feet in the mud, write poetry… Follow that pull in your heart and just let go. It’s good for you! And it just may stop you from feeling stuck in a loop of nostalgia.

What makes you feel happy and exhilarated? Let me know in the comments below.

Thought of the day: I am not always trapped by the confines of adulthood – it’s good for me to let my spirit out to play.
